Manual on technology options for on-site sanitation (2003)
The state of Maharashtra has a unique combination of geological features of impervious black cotton soil, hard rock strata, shallow ground water table, etc. On top of this there are climatic factors e.g., intense rainfall along the coastal belt and drought conditions in the rain shadow area towards the eastern part. On behalf of WSP-SA Mr. Nema of the Foundation developed a manual on technology options for on-site sanitation in rural areas of the state. The objective of the assignment was to develop resource material for field workers and operating NGOs for advising technically appropriate on-site sanitation models. It involved a situation analysis in three districts representing diverse conditions across the state and interaction with a range of stakeholders. Finally the manual which was translated into Marathi offers a range of on-site sanitation models considering affordability, acceptability and technical suitability. Eventually we also provided short-term inputs for training and capacity building of the intended target groups at the state and district levels.
